Forgiveness Without Amnesia

Forgiveness is real, but it is not the same thing as forgetting, trusting again, restoring a relationship, or removing consequences. Christians are called away from vengeance and toward mercy, but that mercy does not require pretending a wound never happened or returning someone to a place where they can cause the same harm again.

There Is a Balm in Gilead

Jeremiah looked at a wounded people and asked why healing had not come. Centuries later, enslaved Black Christians received that lament and sang it through Christ into hope: there is a balm in Gilead. This spiritual does not deny the wound or make peace with oppression. It proclaims that suffering will not have the final word.
