Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.
“Savior, who in human flesh conquered tears by crying, pain by suffering, death by dying, we, your servants, gather before the Cross to commemorate your Passion and to contemplate anew the wonder of your compassionate love. As we listen to your gracious words, uttered with dying lips, illuminate our souls that we may know the truth, melt our hearts that we may hate our sins, nerve our wills that we may do your bidding; to the glory of your name and our own eternal gain.”
Charles Henry Brent (1862-1929)
