Journey through Lent – Day 28

Mark 15:22-23
They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

In a humane gesture, Jesus is offered wine and myrrh at the time of his crucifixion. A common act at the time, the concoction was intended to ease the suffering and dull the mind.

But Jesus refuses. He will not let his mind be sheltered to what is about to happen. He wishes to face the cross and it’s suffering without distraction. He’s felt every thorn, every lash and every spike with a painfully sober mind.

He chose to not drink the cup of wine in order to drink from thee cup of the Father that he had prayed would pass from him in the garden. Now, the cup is nearly empty. The hour is nearly at hand…
