Christmas is my favorite time of the year and a huge part of that is the music. I thought it would be fun to highlight a few of my favorite Christmas albums and share them with you. I’m shooting for a series of 12 (sort of a 12 Days of Christmas sort of thing) but we’ll see what it turns out to be!
The first album up is one that came out last year: Chris Tomlin’s Glory in the Highest. It’s a fantastic worship CD filled with classics and a few new songs for the season. The sound of many of the tracks reminds me of Christmas eve services growing up – the sound of hundreds of voices joining together in song. It’s inspiring and I’m actually planning to use several of the arrangements this year in our services throughout December.
Highlights:
- O Come, All Ye Faithful – Right off the bat, it starts with an acoustic guitar and a mass of voices singing very simply. It builds to a great crescendo.
- Joy to the World (Unspeakable Joy) – This is one of my favorites on the CD – upbeat and with a great, soaring chorus.
- Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Come Thou Long Expected Jesus are both done in an understated style – Come Thou Long Expected Jesus done completely a capella – which is both intimate and majestic.
