Jesus on American Idol?!

I was impressed that the final 8 contestants performed “Shout to the Lord” last night on American Idol. Individual contestants or performers have done songs with religious undertones or even ones that mention Jesus. They get to choose the songs, so it’s no surprise that one would pop up now and again. But this was one performed by the whole group – evidently picked by the producers of the show.

What impressed me was that it’s not a Christian Top 40 song, but a straight up worship song (some might even argue that it’s a borderline hymn as long as it’s been around). They also left the song intact (not replacing Jesus with something more “politically correct”). I wonder what prompted the song and what the overall response was. The crowd seemed to love it.

They certainly would make an awesome worship team!
